1) Celestia
Celestia is a
freely-distributed, multi-platform, open source, software package which has
become a valuable tool for astronomy education. It provides photo-realistic,
real-time, three-dimensional viewing of the Solar System, the galaxy and the
universe. It is used in homes, schools, museums and planetariums around the
world. It also is used as a visualization tool by space mission designers.
Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies,
planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. We can download dozens of
easy to install add-ons with more objects. It also runs on various platforms
such as Windows, Macintosh (Mac OS X) and Linux operating systems.
Although it is optimized for 3D astronomical
visualization, Celestia can be used to display and explore other 3D
environments, too. And, for some reason, many people seem to find exploring
with Celestia to be a lot of fun.
2) Gnu Cash
Gnu
Cash is a source accounting program that implements a double-entry
bookkeeping system. It was initially aimed at developing for small
accounting. Recent development has been focused on adapting to modern desktop
support-library requirements.
On
the other hand, Gnu Cash does accounting and transactions in a more transparent
manner. This makes it easier for students to learn the basics of double entry
bookkeeping. This is why some reviewers say that Gnu Cash is "good as
educational software"
Gnu Cash is part of the GNU Project, and runs on Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris,
Mac OS X, and other like platforms. A
Microsoft port was made available starting with the 2.2.0 series.
